SOCIOECONOMIC AND TERRITORIAL DYNAMICS OF TOURISM ACTIVITIES IN THE SERIDÓ UNESCO GLOBAL GEOPARK
Seridó UNESCO Global Geopark; tourism activities; territorial development; formal employment; wage bill.
This study analyzes the socioeconomic and territorial changes associated with tourism activities in the Seridó UNESCO Global Geopark, designated in 2022. It aims to examine the evolution of formal employment and the total wage bill within Tourism-Related Activities by comparing the six municipalities that comprise the Geopark with municipalities in the Intermediate Geographic Region of Caicó that lie outside the UNESCO-designated territory. The methodology combines quantitative, qualitative, and spatial approaches, using secondary data from Fecomércio RN, the Brazilian Ministry of Tourism, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, and official cartographic databases. The analysis covers the periods 2014–2019, 2020–2021, and 2022–2024. Preliminary results indicate that the Geopark municipalities have higher average levels of formal employment and wage bills per municipality than those outside the Geopark, particularly Currais Novos and Parelhas. However, these benefits are unevenly distributed across the territory, while Caicó continues to play a major role as a regional economic center. Preliminary findings suggest that tourism activities have shown signs of growth following UNESCO designation, although these changes are also influenced by urban structure, accessibility, and the pre-existing economic capacity of each municipality.
