MAPPING OF THE PALEONTOLOGICAL POTENTIAL OF THE URBAN AREA OF SÃO JOSÉ DO RIO PRETO (SP)

This dissertation presents the first mapping of the paleontological potential of the city of São José do Rio Preto (SP). This municipality contains the largest urban area overlying the Adamantina Formation. This geological unit, whose depositional interval dates from the Santonian to the Campanian stages of the Late Cretaceous, is internationally recognized for its high fossil richness, particularly for the diversity of crocodyliforms. This research sought to integrate urbanization processes with paleontology by analyzing the interactions between natural heritage and anthropogenic activities that favor the exposure and discovery of new fossils. Geological mapping in an urban context proved to be a significant challenge due to the scarcity of natural rock outcrops, a condition associated with regional geomorphology, intense weathering, and soil and vegetation cover. To characterize paleontological potential, parameters such as soil depth, fossil quality and state of preservation, occurrence of fossiliferous strata, presence of research institutions and specialized museum spaces, and the intensity of construction activities were considered. The results support the hypothesis that a significant portion of fossils with high scientific and museological potential has been systematically lost due to procedural failures and gaps in the monitoring of urban construction activities. This scenario results in the routine annual disposal of fossiliferous materials in landfill areas, without proper screening or scientific documentation of sediments derived from earth-moving activities. Within this context, the study aimed to identify the main anthropogenic activities responsible for exposing fossil-bearing layers, as well as to map urban areas with the highest concentration of such interventions. Based on these analyses, the research proposes to provide technical support for municipal urban planning, contributing to the incorporation of paleontological heritage preservation into territorial management instruments, such as the Master Plan.
