SUMMARY:

This study aims to analyze the geomorphological, structural, and hydrological factors associated with the occurrence of a fluvial anomaly in the Ribeirão Lambari watershed, located in the municipality of Sapopema, Paraná State, Brazil, in order to understand the processes responsible for local drainage reorganization. The methodology included a literature review, the preparation and analysis of cartographic products using a Geographic Information System (GIS), watershed morphometric analyses, drainage network interpretation, multitemporal analysis of satellite imagery, climatological characterization based on precipitation extreme indices recommended by the Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices (ETCCDI), and field surveys. The results showed that the watershed is characterized by intense relief dissection, strong morphostructural control, and high drainage density, conditions that favor adjustments in fluvial dynamics. In the anomalous sector, a meander neck cutoff was identified, resulting in the formation of a new channel and the partial abandonment of the former drainage course. Multitemporal analysis indicated that this drainage reorganization occurred between 2004 and 2013. Climatological characterization revealed that the rainfall event recorded on January 30, 2010, with a daily precipitation of 154.5 mm, was one of the highest-magnitude events in the historical series (1976–2025), greatly exceeding the P95 and P99 percentile thresholds and exhibiting characteristics of a high-magnitude, low-frequency hydrological event. The integration of geomorphological, structural, and climatological evidence indicates that drainage reorganization resulted from the interaction between a pre-existing morphostructural predisposition and an extreme hydrological event, which likely acted as the trigger for the meander neck cutoff. The findings contribute to the understanding of the geomorphological evolution of structurally controlled fluvial systems and of the processes responsible for drainage reorganization in river basins.
