SUMMARY:

This research experimentally analyzes the effect of water micro-spraying on the thermal performance of corrugated fiber-cement roofing tiles of different colors (white, gray, and black), under controlled laboratory conditions. The central indicator adopted is the operative temperature, calculated from the internal surface temperature and the internal air temperature (), measured by DS18B20 sensors (±0.5 °C) positioned inside the experimental test bench. This work is situated within the context of the tropical climate of Maringá-PR, where fiber-cement tiles are widely used in low-income housing due to their low cost, but they exhibit high solar radiation absorptance and low thermal resistance, which causes rapid heating of buildings and consequent thermal discomfort for residents. In this study, the experimental apparatus developed by Bergamasco and Silva (2024) and adapted by Okumoto (2025) will be used. The structure consists of an MDF box measuring 0.4 × 0.3 × 0.5 m, with 10 mm internal Styrofoam insulation, six 100 W infrared lamps, and DS18B20 (±0.5 °C) sensors connected to an Arduino UNO R3. On top of this structure, a micro-spray system with a collection gutter and water recirculation will be installed. The tests will be carried out sequentially, one tile color at a time (white, gray, and black), all positioned at a 15° inclination, with lateral sealing of the test bench. For each tile color, two indicators will be calculated: the absolute temperature reduction (), which quantifies the surface temperature drop caused by micro-spraying, and the relative cooling efficiency (η), which expresses the achieved reduction as a proportion of the maximum possible reduction. This second indicator is important because the black tile starts from a higher initial temperature than the white one, so that comparison based solely on absolute variation would distort the relative effectiveness of spraying for each color. The experimental test bench, operating in a controlled environment, will allow the isolation of color as the comparative variable, keeping irradiance, inclination, and micro-spray conditions constant across tests. The  is adopted as a comparative indicator among configurations, not as an absolute measure of comfort in an inhabited environment, acknowledging the scale limitations of the test bench.
